Cycling Along the Mekong

  • Pedal to the rhythm of the Mekong.
  • Pass through villages and tropical orchards.
  • Explore the paths between canals and rice fields.
  • Discover the floating market of Cai Rang.
  • Cross the river by local ferry.

A gentle entry into the delta, between water and rural tracks

This two-day cycling trip offers a gradual immersion into one of the most iconic regions of southern Vietnam. Between Ho Chi Minh City, Cai Be, Vinh Long, and Can Tho, the route quickly leaves the main roads to favor small shaded lanes, village paths, and passages as close as possible to the canals. This experience is offered by our French-speaking travel agency francophone travel agency, which designs itineraries aimed at encouraging a detailed and accessible discovery of the regions crossed.

Here, the bicycle becomes a true thread that leads you into the landscape. It allows you to cross the delta without flying over it, to grasp its nuances, rhythms, and the continuity of rural everyday life. Between tropical orchards, ferry landings, agricultural scenes, and local markets, each stretch of road creates a living interpretation of the Mekong, where water and land constantly intertwine in a gentle, inhabited atmosphere, deeply rooted in local life—while always feeling close to the daily life of the people, during a trip to Vietnam.

First paths of the delta, between orchards, crafts, and village life

Departing from Ho Chi Minh City marks a gradual transition toward a more rural setting in the direction of Cai Lay. As the city falls away, the landscape opens up, traffic eases, and the first canals come into view—creating a gentle entry into the delta.

The first cycling loop takes you through a dense, generous agricultural landscape, set to the rhythm of rambutan, durian, longan, and jackfruit plantations. The route runs along quiet paths, punctuated by stops in villages where everyday life naturally unfolds. You can see simple, precise gestures: harvesting peanuts, making coconut-based treats by hand, or the steps involved in transforming rice into puffed products.

A stop at a local market reveals another side of the delta’s energy—more lively, but still on a human scale—made of quick exchanges and vivid colors. Not far from there, the Catholic church of Cai Be, built in the 1930s, adds a discreet piece of heritage that fits naturally into the rural landscape and enriches the region’s cultural reading.

Between canals and rice fields, progress along the river

After lunch, the paths continue alongside the canals, in a shadier and more relaxed atmosphere. The routes are shared with local residents, between bicycles and scooters, in a smooth, everyday rhythm.

Next comes the ferry crossing at Dinh Khao, a key moment in the itinerary—connecting Cai Ngang and offering a fresh perspective on the river, wider and more open, almost monumental in its slow pace.

The second part of the day’s cycling unfolds in the heart of vast rice fields and scattered villages. The landscape gradually becomes more expansive—almost infinite in places—while keeping that distinctive delta feeling, where the horizontal lines seem to stretch on without end. A stop can be made at a Khmer pagoda—discreet, yet revealing of the region’s cultural diversity. Arrival in Can Tho then comes gently, and depending on the pace and conditions, you may have the chance to enjoy a viewpoint from the suspension bridge over the Mekong.

Can Tho and Cai Rang, between life on the waterways and delta villages

The following day begins on the water with an introduction to the Cai Rang floating market, one of the liveliest in the delta. Boats cross paths there in a smooth, continuous flow, with exchanges happening directly from the vessels. Activity is constant, driven by the river’s movements and the circulation of local produce, in an atmosphere that is both noisy and perfectly organized.

Navigation continues next along a narrower canal, where the atmosphere changes gradually. The noise fades, the banks draw closer, and the vegetation becomes denser. The air grows calmer, almost suspended—offering another perspective on the area, more intimate and contemplative.

The journey continues by bike for a new immersion in the delta’s landscapes. The roads chosen remain intentionally secondary, running through rural areas where everyday life goes on without any staging. The pace stays easy and flexible, leaving room for spontaneous encounters, natural stops, and attentive observation of local everyday scenes.

After lunch, the return to Ho Chi Minh City signals the end of this chapter in the delta, with a gradual shift back toward the urban environment. The contrast between the two worlds highlights even more the richness of the landscapes covered over these two days and the variety of atmospheres encountered.

To extend the experience, an optional add-on from My Tho or Long An allows you to keep exploring the rural landscapes of the south—still along small roads lined with rice fields—continuing naturally from this immersion in the Mekong.

We made a 17-days familly tour prepared by Prabath. We had various requests due our familly organization and Prabath has always been solution oriented, patient and very kind to propose alternatives which fitted with our expectations. Our guide Terrence is a very friendly and caring person who made everything possible to please us and show us the best of Sri Lanka. He is a very good driver and a very professionnal guide with large knowledges in fauna, flora, history, culture, religion. He shared a lot with us throughout our trip and visits and it was really part a of what we appreciated a lot. Beyond that, we are very satisfied with the respect of the sustainability certification : hotels and homestays, as well as visits, experiences of valuable local handicraft were in line with this commitment. If you wish to come in Sri Lanka and experience the best, we can only recommand to use the services offered by Atypique Voyages! We come back with hundreds of amazing memories from our trip. Thank you so much Atypique Voyages! 🙏🏻
