Hidden Trails of the North

  • Hike through the heart of terraced rice fields.
  • Stay overnight in a homestay with Thai locals.
  • Cross valleys still untouched.
  • Discover the Hieu waterfall along the trail.
  • Travel between remote villages and unspoiled nature.

A mountain escape

Between Mai Chau and the Pu Luong nature reserve, this three-day journey offers a gradual immersion into the mountains of northern Vietnam. Through accessible hiking trails, traditional Thai villages, and terraced rice-field landscapes, the itinerary invites you to slow down and let yourself be carried by the gentleness of the valleys. A simple, authentic experience, shaped by walking and meeting people, closest to local life, created by our “custom travel agency.

Throughout your stay, the terrain takes on a different feel—smoother, more enveloping—offering a sensitive look at these still-preserved regions. Away from the busiest routes, the experience prioritizes the continuity of the landscape and the quality of the interactions during a “trip to Vietnam.

A gradual entry into the mountains of Northern Vietnam

From Hanoi, the itinerary quickly moves away from the urban bustle to reach roads that gradually wind down into the mountains. The change in atmosphere is gradual: the city gives way to rural stretches, then to the first verdant undulations of Mai Chau.

After about four hours on the road, arriving in the village of Poom Coom marks a first pause in the rhythm of the journey. A short walk allows you to connect with the Thai community, observe the village’s layout, and get a sense of this rural territory where life revolves around crops and seasons. Lunch, prepared using local produce, fits into this first simple immersion—without artifice—yet it is already deeply rooted in the daily life of the residents.

In the afternoon, the road continues toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The landscape evolves gradually, revealing more pronounced reliefs, deep valleys, and terraced rice paddies that shape the hillsides. It is in this setting that the first hike of the trip begins. For about three hours, the trails alternate between agricultural paths, stretches through forest, and crossings of small, isolated hamlets. The pace is steady, sometimes slower on the climbs, giving time to watch the valleys open up in the distance.

At the end of the day, arriving at a village and settling into a traditional stilt house mark an important step. The simple, open architecture—facing the outdoors—helps you stay as close as possible to the environment. Dinner, shared with the hosts, extends this first immersion into local life, before a quiet night in a setting that is entirely rural.

Pu Luong, between living valleys and discreet trails

The second day opens in a peaceful atmosphere, still shaped by the quiet of the village. The pace is slow, almost suspended, before gradually picking up again with breakfast and the day’s preparations. At 8:00 a.m., the departure marks the start of a deeper exploration of Pu Luong.

This hiking day reveals another side of the natural reserve. The paths taken are more discreet, sometimes narrow, winding between terraced rice paddies and cultivated valleys. The landscapes change gently, with no abrupt break: an ongoing alternation between fields, forests, and scattered villages. You pass through inhabited areas where local life unfolds alongside agricultural activities, in great simplicity.

Throughout the hike, viewpoints open up regularly onto the surrounding reliefs. The valleys are revealed in successive layers, offering a very graphic reading of the land shaped by generations of farmers. Picnic-style lunch fits naturally into this continuity, right in the heart of the reserve, in a calm, protected environment.

In the afternoon, the trail gradually leads to Hieu Village. The approach is gentle, with water appearing and the sound of the waterfall accompanying your arrival. The Hieu waterfall then becomes the central point of the day’s end—a place where the landscape shifts in pace. Free time allows you to wander through the village, observe local life, or simply stay by the water in a very soothing atmosphere.

The day ends there with dinner and a night in a homestay or an ecolodge, depending on the planned arrangements. The surroundings remain simple, surrounded by nature, with a strong sense of being completely removed from the main routes.

Final moments in Hieu and a gradual return to Hanoi

The last morning begins in continuity with this calm atmosphere. Hieu Village is discovered once again at a slow pace, with the chance to enjoy the last moments in this natural setting. It’s a more contemplative time, when you notice the village sounds more, the movement of the water, and everyday life gradually returning.

Then, a hike of about 1.5 hours allows you to reach Pho Doan, a small local town where the vehicle is waiting for the return to Hanoi. This transition on foot plays an important role in the end of the journey: it helps you gradually leave the trails to return to the main roads, while still keeping a direct connection with the landscape.

Before getting back on the road, lunch is served at a local restaurant. This final meal continues the journey: simple and rooted in the region you’ve been traveling through. Then, the trip to Hanoi takes several hours, passing through landscapes that are already familiar, but perceived differently after these two days of hiking.

As you head back, the reliefs soften, the villages become denser, and then the capital gradually comes back into view. Arriving late in the day marks the end of the trip, with in your memory a succession of valleys, trails, and simple moments lived to the rhythm of Northern Vietnam.

We made a 17-days familly tour prepared by Prabath. We had various requests due our familly organization and Prabath has always been solution oriented, patient and very kind to propose alternatives which fitted with our expectations. Our guide Terrence is a very friendly and caring person who made everything possible to please us and show us the best of Sri Lanka. He is a very good driver and a very professionnal guide with large knowledges in fauna, flora, history, culture, religion. He shared a lot with us throughout our trip and visits and it was really part a of what we appreciated a lot. Beyond that, we are very satisfied with the respect of the sustainability certification : hotels and homestays, as well as visits, experiences of valuable local handicraft were in line with this commitment. If you wish to come in Sri Lanka and experience the best, we can only recommand to use the services offered by Atypique Voyages! We come back with hundreds of amazing memories from our trip. Thank you so much Atypique Voyages! 🙏🏻
