Ba Be, between lakes and jungle

  • The gentleness of the landscapes.
  • Nights in a stilt house.
  • A peaceful journey across lakes, a river, and a waterfall.
  • The preserved atmosphere of the national park.
  • Simple moments shared with the locals.

Three days at the slow pace of Northern Vietnam

North of Hanoi, the Ba Be region feels like a world apart—away from the main tourist routes and the most frequented circuits. The moment you leave the capital, the road gradually pushes deeper into a more rural Vietnam, where the landscapes seem to open up and settle down as the hours pass. The terrain becomes more pronounced, the villages more spread out, and the whole place gives the impression of a world organized around nature rather than speed, imagined by our “},{authentic travel agency.

Ba Be is discovered as a breath. Lakes, forests, mountains, and Tay villages come together in a harmonious whole, where water takes center stage. Here, the journey doesn’t try to multiply stops, but to settle into a gentler pace—guided by simple movements and encounters—during a “},{trip to Vietnam.

From Hanoi to the first landscapes of Ba Be

Departure from Hanoi marks a gradual transition. Very quickly, buildings give way to roads lined with vegetation, cultivated fields, and scenes from rural everyday life. The journey becomes an experience in itself, shaped by views of landscapes that slowly shift in density and color.

A pause at a local restaurant further anchors this entry into the north of the country. There, you’ll find simple, unpretentious cuisine that naturally accompanies the road toward the Bac Kan mountains.

Arriving in a Tay village at the heart of Ba Be National Park introduces a new pace. Settling into a traditional stilt house comes with an immediate feeling of calm.

A first walk helps you get a sense of the surroundings. Trails open onto areas of dense vegetation, spots of water, and wider perspectives of the park. When conditions allow, a swim in the lake offers a first direct immersion in this aquatic landscape.

Later, a trip by bicycle or motorbike takes you to a nearby cave. The route passes through peaceful countryside, where everyday life unfolds without staging: locals working, children playing near the houses, animals roaming freely. The day ends with a shared dinner with the residents, in a simple atmosphere, before a night in the stilt house.

Navigating through the lakes of Ba Be

The next morning, the national park is revealed from the water. After breakfast, boarding a local boat offers a new way of reading the landscape. The pace slows even more, driven by the steady movement of the boat and the relative silence of the lakes.

The navigation cuts across the different stretches of water and follows the course of the river. Your gaze gets lost between the hills covered in vegetation and the changing reflections of light on the water. Passing under a cave brings a natural variation to the route, before reaching a waterfall where the landscape becomes denser and more forceful.

Throughout the journey, set-back villages appear intermittently—quiet, discreet, and integrated into the landscape. This human presence remains subtle, as if set back from the surrounding nature, reinforcing the feeling of balance between the two.

Lunch is taken at a small local place near the waterfall. This simple moment marks a pause before resuming navigation toward calmer areas of the lake. A swim is possible, extending direct contact with this aquatic environment.

Late in the day, walking through several ethnic minority villages brings you closer to another face of Ba Be. Here, everyday life unfolds without staging, in a natural continuity between homes, nature, and activities. The return to the stilt house is in a peaceful atmosphere, followed by dinner and a second night with the host family.

Gradual return to Hanoi

The last morning begins with the village’s first activities. The atmosphere is calm, almost contemplative, as the day starts slowly for the residents. After a shared breakfast, it’s time to leave the host family and get back on the road.

A stop at a tea plantation punctuates the return. The landscape changes again, becoming more open and structured by the crops and the lines of the plantations. This break introduces another side of northern Vietnam—more agricultural—yet still connected to the surrounding relief.

Lunch is taken in a local house, accompanied by tea prepared on site. This simple moment of sharing helps extend the spirit of the journey before resuming the road toward the capital.

Arrival in Hanoi marks the end of this interlude in northern Vietnam: a trip built around slowness, natural landscapes, and encounters.

We made a 17-days familly tour prepared by Prabath. We had various requests due our familly organization and Prabath has always been solution oriented, patient and very kind to propose alternatives which fitted with our expectations. Our guide Terrence is a very friendly and caring person who made everything possible to please us and show us the best of Sri Lanka. He is a very good driver and a very professionnal guide with large knowledges in fauna, flora, history, culture, religion. He shared a lot with us throughout our trip and visits and it was really part a of what we appreciated a lot. Beyond that, we are very satisfied with the respect of the sustainability certification : hotels and homestays, as well as visits, experiences of valuable local handicraft were in line with this commitment. If you wish to come in Sri Lanka and experience the best, we can only recommand to use the services offered by Atypique Voyages! We come back with hundreds of amazing memories from our trip. Thank you so much Atypique Voyages! 🙏🏻
